Breed History

The Sphynx being hairless is a natural mutation which occurred naturally and is a recessive gene.  Hairless cats have been documented throughout the world, but the first successful breed was the Sphynx.  Around 1966 a domestic shorthair cat, in Canada, became the mother to a hairless kitten.  The breed then began by carefully outcrossing to American Shorthairs and Devon Rexes.  Today, domestic shorthairs are also accepted as an outcross.  The reason for these selective pairings is to create a genetically sound cat, a large gene pool, and few to no health problems.
